Sharpen Your Analytical Thinking Through EDCO 2015



Debate is a formal discussion on a particular matter in a public meeting or legislative assembly, in which opposing arguments are put forward. We can also sharpen our analytical thinking through intellectual debate, and this goal of debate was known as a theme for EDCO 2015. EDCO or English Debating Competition itself is an annual event that is organized by BEM ED and presented to all UNJ students. This means every students from every departments in UNJ can participate in this competition.
   We chose British Parliamentary system to hold this event. Ka Egi, our chief of adjudicators lead the introduction of the rules and the debate simulation to the participants in techical meeting on Friday, April 10th at UPT auditorium. To end the techical meeting day, the Liasion Officers stepped forward to be introduced to the participants. Liaison officer is a person whose jobs are to accompany the participants and give information about EDCO to them.
  The competition day finally began on Saturday, April 18th at Maftuha Auditorium with total 44 teams of participants who were ready to compete with each others. After the first match up session, all the teams went to Building O to do the case building with each team mates. They debated in different rooms and each rooms were contained of 4 teams, 2 Liasion Officers, and 1 adjudicator. There were total 3 debate sessions before deciding which teams would go to the quarter final.  Before announcing the quarter final debaters plus the best speaker, Rosidah, one of ED students showed us an interesting beatbox performance to break the tension. The quarter final debaters were finally announced and Regina was officially chosen as The Best Speaker of EDCO 2015. One more debate session was held to decide which teams that would go to the 2nd day of competition on Sunday for the semi final. As the night went darker, the semi final debaters were finally announced and it made them should take some rest and prepare even better for the awaited Sunday.
 April 19th was officially the climax of EDCO 2015 where all the semi final debaters were gathered to do a debate session that would decide which teams were deserved the final places. An amazing accoustic performance by Anjas & friends was presented to the participants. In this chance, Anjas  invited Ega and Acus from Brothers in D'Soul, one of the most talented indie bands from Bandung. The fascinating performance which everyone enjoyed finally brought them to the announcement of final debaters. 4 teams were chosen to compete once again to get the top position.
 The awaited moment finally came as it was the time to announce all the winners of EDCO 2015. The 4th rank went to Iqram and Wahyu, the 3rd rank was brought to Arry and Adrian, the 2nd place was made for Ganesha and Christanto, and the last, the 1st place went to Regina and Leiny from English Department. Regina who was gifted as the best speaker plus being in the team who just got the first place in EDCO 2015 tried to share her experience in this competition, "EDCO is challenging, especially because the motions that came out were totally different from last year so it made all the participants used our creative thinking more than just looking at the text. Honestly, my teammate Leini and I couldn't believe that we could be in the first place. We were surprised and also really happy. Next time, we hope we can bring the names of ED and UNJ in other competitions out there. For all the participants of EDCO next year, don't give up before you try!"
