EDCO (English Debating Competition) 2012 – Speak Up Your Mind and Vision
What is EDCO? EDCO is university-level debating competition event from Vice Rector III which is held by English Department Student Executive Board. On this event, all faculties from entire UNJ are invited to participate.
And this year, EDCO was held at 20th – 22nd April 2012. “Speak Up Your Mind and Vision” as theme and Asian Parliamentary was used as the debating rules. 24 teams from different faculties and departments, 15 competent adjudicators, 26 selected liaison officers, and 51 committees enlivened this event.
The first day started, Friday 20th April, the committees had been steady at Library Aula since 07.00 AM. That day was opened by Traditional Dance from ED, a speech from Chief Committee, Adam Ferdinal and from English Department representative Mr. Darya. Then continued for reregistering the team, technical meeting, introducing liaison officers and adjudicators, and closed with debate simulation which was adjusted by Ms. Molly (Maulidia Rahmi) as the chief adjudicator. But the first day was not too populous because some teams couldn’t come and some teams were withdrawn.
The second day started, Saturday 21st April 2012, just like the previous day, the committees had been steady since 07.00 AM at Library Aula. On this day, there were Preliminary Rounds until Quarter Final. Here we could see “old” faces like Rizki Fadli (Management 1), the EDCO 2011 Best Speaker, Andi Muhammad Yusuf and Siti Navila, The ED’s renowned debaters, and few other great debaters who had competed at the previous EDCO.
First Preliminary Round began, the first motion was given and the match up was announced, the LOs (Liaison Officers) escorted their teams to the debating room and start to build the case then.
First match was done. After the adjudicator gave their verbal adjudication, they went back to the Aula, and the first match result was showed, like everybody had guessed, Management 1 leaded the score table. The same procedure repeated until the quarter final. There were no surprise, the favorite teams, like Management 1, English Department 1 and English Department 2 went straight to the quarter final, accompanied with Indonesian, Chemistry, Math 2, TP 1 and TP 2. In this round, Management against Math 2, Chemistry versus Indonesian and another two matches were unique, maybe we can call it “Civil Wars”, when English Department 1 meet English Department 2 and TP 1 fight TP 2, with 3 adjudicators for each room.
Quarter final was done. Everybody looked so tight to see the result. And the result was showed, and the Semi-Finalists went to TP 1, Chemistry, ED 1 and the most favorite team, Management 1. Semi-Final was held on the last day.
Here we go! The last day of EDCO, it presented Semi-Final and Final matches. The semi-final motion and match up were announced. Chemistry met ED 1 and Management 1 against TP 1. And the semi-final matches finally finished. Even though every team was great, it was not enough to swing to the final. The result was showed, and the finalists went to ED 1 and Management, predictable.
Rizki Fadli and Nadia N. the senior debaters and their newcomer comrade M. Fadli as the member of Management 1 as the Government against Andi Muhammad Yusuf, another senior debater with 2 fresh debaters, Egi Ryan Aldino and Nurul Adha from English Department 1 as the Opposite with “This house believe that the court is better than the legislature” as the motion and special for the final round, there would be 5 adjudicators.
The final match began, The debate went tight. Knowledge, Insights and Skills were needed here, and these semi-finalist knew how to caprice them to win the debate.
And final match finished. Before the adjudicators gave their verbal adjudication and result, there was a nice performance from TED (Theatre of English Department),
TED showing the scenario how strong the government authority power is. TED showed how hard the students tried to demonstrate their aspiration and how hard they tried to prosecute justice, they are still weak in front of the authority.
After TED’s performance, the adjudicators gave their verbal adjudication first before announced the result. Surprisingly, Mr. Fachry said that the final was not the best match, because the debate materials that each finalist gave, were too standard. They were too far from the reality. But despite of those comments, the final was good.
Finally, the time, that the finalists had waited, came, the result announcement. Just like in every competition, there should be a winner. And English Department 1 came up as the 1st winner and Management 1 as the 2nd winner with Rizki Fadli was stated as the Best Speaker.
Lastly, EDCO 2012 closed with a speech from Ms. Ince Dian as the Vice Rector III representative and the trophy provision for the winners.
